Congratulations and our deepest thanks to each of you. You have all been selected to serve on the Student Learning Fee Committee for the College of Communication and Education for this year. This is an entirely new function for the college and a new procedure for the university. We will be learning as we go. My task, as Associate Dean, is to organize and conduct your meetings and to guide the committee, but not to have a vote. The seven of you are the only voting members. We need to meet as soon as that can be arranged, so that I can share with you the best information we have on the objectives and required procedures for your committee. Very simply put, your responsibilities are: 1. to call for proposals from within the college, 2. to review with the proposals that come to you from the college, and 3. to rank them and recommend them to the dean. Liz *******, in the college office, will be contacting you to learn about your schedules so that she can find times that we can meet. I look forward to meeting those of you whom I have not already met, and to working with you for the rest of this year. Terry ****** ______ _________________________

I just checked the http://apps.c**********.edu/learningfee webpage and under College Ranking I only see three proposals, one of which seems to be a demo proposal, with no content. Do all of you see the same? Terry
Terry, et al: I'm working on a t-shirt design for our committee. Initially the design was pretty "racy," according to my coworker, so I'm trying to class it up a tad. Here's what I have so far: Let me know what you think! -Shelby
I am seeing just two. Those regarding speech lab and portable sound system. Nathan
Yvonne has explained the problem. Each of you, since you are on the committee, see a link that I don’t (or at least didn’t) get to see. It is “Member Ranking.” Yvonne has temporarily made me a member of the committee so that I will have visibility into it until you get to the voting stage. Click on the “member ranking” link at the left and you should all be able to see them all. Terry
Just to confirm: Right now I see a total of nine proposals. You should all see the same number. Those are all that were submitted. The total of all the requests is $85,751, so we can submit them all. Your task is to rank them. Terry |

I think that's great idea. I'm reluctant to participate because I'm not supposed to influence the committee's rankings. At the very least it would seem that you should try to reach consensus on the criteria you will use to judge them. The process suggests that the number of students affected should be one. If you could agree on a small number of other basic criteria, that should be of real help in figuring out how to rank them. If you could reach consensus on a rubric that describes two or three levels of satisfaction of each of the criteria, that would make ranking the proposals pretty easy, I would think.

SO OK, I don't want to derail this good convo we have going here, but I have a few more
t-shirt ideas that I'd thought I'd bounce off you guys. We also don't have to necessarily pick one
of my ideas, but we should probably decide sooner rather than later, is what I think.
This first one is kind of rough but it's kind of neat that way (it's a picazo drawing).:

[Not sure if I'm happy with it yet though as it seems the cat has a broken leg and would kind of confuse the message]
This next one is from a drawing a friend of mine did, she doesn't draw anymore but I think it's good she shouldn't have quit it:
This last one is pretty goofball-zany but I think a lot of people would think it's cute and would buy it for our good cause:
Also we have to realize that Terry's in kind of a difficult position being that she's merely a faculty member acting in an overseer capacity of some sort. We're going to need a student leader for conducting votes on criteria and other things and unless there are any objectons I would like to volunteer for this position.
Let's chat about it next time we meetup.

Shelby, I’m not sure if everyone else is as confused by your email as I am, but probably it would be a good idea if you could drop by my office (Teh*** 205) sometime tomorrow so we could chat about your T-shirt designs.

Shelby,
I am not on the committee but I work in the college office and have been getting all of the emails. I was a little confused by your emails as Terry suggests but I want to add to his email.
I know of no mechanism to sell t-shirts and use that money to help support students. I think Associated Students organizations and the clubs who are affiliated with them are able to do this but not the Student Learning Fee committees.
If your idea is for the committee to buy t-shirts to celebrate the experience and show camaraderie I think it is a great idea. I am already sold on the idea and would love to get a shirt even though I am not on the committee. You definitely have enthusiasm and talent in generating ideas.

Hi All,
There are still apparently some glitches with the SLF online proposal system. Three of the nine proposals don’t include the information that was supposed to indicate which courses, and how many, and how many students would benefit from the proposal.
Rather than punishing the authors of those proposals for the weakness in the system, I’m going to send some of that information to you in this email. I realize that will mean having to match these up and that is what the online system was supposed to make unnecessary, but under the circumstances, I think it is the only way to proceed.
For the proposal entitled, “Outdoor Education Equipment,” this information will tell you about courses and students affected:
Course Number | Course Title | Units | Ave Enrollment per class | Average Enrollment per semester | Average Enrollment per Academic year |
KINE 121 | Backpacking | 2 | 20 | 80 | 160 |
KINE 122 | Intermediate Backpacking | 3 | 18 | 18 | 18 |
KINE 123 | Indoor Rock Climbing | 1 | 24 | 96 | 192 |
KINE 124 | Basic Rock Climbing | 2 | 22 | 176 | 352 |
KINE 126 | Beginning Kayaking | 2 | 15 | 30 | 45 |
KINE 127 | Beginning Canoeing | 2 | 20 | 20 | 40 |
KINE 353 | Advanced Kayaking | 2 | 15 | 15 | 15 |
*KINE 357 | Lead and Multi-Pitch Climbing | 2 | 20 | 20 | 20 |
KINE 470 | Outdoor Education Immersion(Was Practicum in Outdoor Education) | 15 | 15 | 15 | 15 |
| | TOTALS | 593 | 1020 |
* These classes are being offered for the 1st time in spring 2011 class size is estimated
** The demand for these courses has been so high that will be offering 2 sections starting in spring 2011
For the proposal entitled “Funding C***, C******** Second Life Campus,” this information will tell you about courses and students affected. Also, the School of Social Work, on their own, is investing in Second Life for all its students for training and simulation purposes.
For the proposal entitled, “Building a State-of –the-Art Speech Lab,” the proposal lists five classes in Communication Sciences and Disorders. They are identified both in the body of the description and in the “Benefits and Impact” section. In the last year their total enrollments have been about 175 in the fall and 50 in the spring. The proposal also indicates that Kinesiology and Child Development students would benefit from funding the proposal.

Hey there guys,
I think the Second Life idea is fantastic and that a proposal should be submitted that all departments implement Second Life as a teaching tool. Think about this: faculty and students could try out a social scenario with potentially substantial concequences and if the choices made result in a "flop" in Second Life, then people wouldn't be inclined to make those same decisions in real life. Maybe it doesn't even have to be related to student life, like say you don't know whether or not you should turn your neighbor in for committing a pretty serious crime, or if you can't decide whether or not to take in another stray as a pet. Try it out on the computer game first! Should I write this one up?
I also think that "Winter and the Mountains" (KINE 227) is a pretty vague name for a class and I would like to formally propose that we change it to something better, like "Surviving in the Mountains of Wintertime." I mean maybe that would bring in more students since it doesn't seem to be as popular as some of the other courses. Or maybe offering it in two sections, "Winter" and "The Mountains." Just some thoughts.
Terry: I was going to stop by this afternoon but I forgot that today is my trick-shot "seminar" (I'm volunteer assistant to the pool instructor at the Towne Lounge at 327 Main) and that's pretty much going to take up all of the afternoon today and Thursday. I'm thinking 3:30 or 4pm on Friday might be best for me. Let me know if that's going to work for you.
OKAY, aside from all of that -- again, I'm open to other T-shirt ideas here so just submit them to all of us on this list and since I'm student committee leader now I'm going to suggest that we have a vote tomorrow to see which design we're going to use. Here are a few more I worked up this morning:
Spent some time on the lettering for this one:

This one's pretty off-the-wall but in a good quirky way (maybe):
I guess I'm not sure about the message we're supposed to communicate via this t-shirt. Should we even be doing a t-shirt?
Regardless, a friend of mine's dad owns a t-shirt printer of some sort and said we could use it for free! We just have to buy the t-shirts.

Shelby,
I don’t think you are clear on what this committee is supposed to do. That’s why I asked you to come by. I was hoping that I could have a moment to go into some detail with you about the process and what kind of a contribution you might be able to make. I was hoping to avoid you any embarrassment.
This isn’t a matter of raising money. We aren’t trying to come up with ideas to raise money. Half of the money has already been paid by students, all of them, at $20 each, at the beginning of this semester, and the other half will be paid at the beginning of the next semester. The total figure is $200,000. That money will be distributed by the provost according to recommendations that come from the colleges. This committee is asked to go through the proposals from this college and rank them so that the dean will have input from the students and faculty in order to make her recommendation to the provost.
So the task of the committee is to agree on the criteria you are going to use to rank the proposals, read them all, and then submit your rankings.
The entire committee is meeting on Friday morning at 10 am in Teh*** Hall room 214 to review the proposals and rank them as a group. By that time I hope that you will have communicated with the others and come up with an agreement about the criteria, and will have come up with your own ranking. Please let me know if you will not be able to attend that meeting. We really need your input – and that is the time for it.
If it is at all unclear what it is that we are asking you to do, please email me again or call me on my cell phone **0.*18.*951 and let me help you understand what this is all about.

I agree. Second life can do so much if instructors would just learn to experience there. What they could do for student learning could be incredible. I don't know how much responsibility the committee has for course nomenclature. Regardless of name, I am not subjecting my hinney to sleeping on the snow. ;-)
Honestly, I have a million T shirts. Although I applaud your ideas, energy and ownership of the committee work. (I love cats too!)

I have gotten more information about the “Building a State-of-the-Art Speech Lab” proposal. It still doesn’t include all of what was asked for, but more. These are the classes, along with their normal enrollment, that would benefit. We still don’t know which ones are fall, spring, or summer.
For CMSD:
CMSD 362 Anatomy & Physiology of the Speech and Hearing Mechanism = 55 students
CMSD 341 Voice and Fluency Disorders = 50 students
CMSD 363 Acoustics and Psychoacoustics of Speech = 55 students
CMSD 488 Research Methods = 55 students (2 sections)
CMSD 470 Orientation to Clinical Practicum = 50 students
CMSD 632 Seminar in Communication Sciences and Disorders = 22 students
CMSD 635 Voice and Resonance Disorders = 22 students

Do we know whether or not "Research Methods" (CMSD 488) is a lab? It's in 2 sections so maybe one is a lab and one is a normal note-taking class. Somebody email me if you have the deets on that particular course.
I did a little research on Second Life last night and now I'm not so sure it's a good idea to use it in any classes here. Did you know people can get addicted to playing it, like addicted like a drug addicted? I haven't played it myself but I'm guessing that it could open up several gnarly cans of worms with regard to helping students focus and direct their coursework.
Lastly, I guess I'm a little surprised at the semi-tepid response I've gotten from (most of) my committee members. I'm not sure you guys understand how hard it is, and indeed how much time and creative effort it takes, for me to develop these pieces. I went to a very well-funded high school and we had a friggin stellar graphic design studio and I routinely scored B's or A's on all my projects.
I'm not trying to brag when I say that, I just think we could use a little more team spirit and I *know* that I'm not the only creative one on our committee. Once we get done with this shirt situation, we can move on to more important topics, like the ones about choosing criteria for these propositions. We also should probably appoint someone as researcher of Second Life and its side effects so I guess I'll appoint Jim Aida to that role. (Jim: if you could, have some material you can present to us Friday morning on this very important topic.)
All that aside, I have a few last-minute entries I need to throw into the fray ~

OK,
Here’s what you came up with
Beth | Shelby | Ian | James | Nathan | J | Don | Mean | Rank by Mean | Standard deviation | Median | Rank by Median
motion analysis | 1 | 3 | 9 | 8 | 4 | 7 | 9 | 5.86 | 8 | 3.18 | 7 | 8 |
headsets | 4 | 9 | 1 | 2 | 1 | 3 | 3 | 3.29 | 1 | 2.75 | 3 | 2 |
second life | 9 | 2 | 8 | 1 | 9 | 2 | 1 | 4.57 | 3 | 3.87 | 2 | 1 |
outdoor ed | 7 | 8 | 7 | 7 | 3 | 9 | 8 | 7.00 | 9 | 1.91 | 7 | 8 |
ilife | 3 | 1 | 2 | 5 | 8 | 4 | 4 | 3.86 | 2 | 2.27 | 4 | 4 |
journ. lab assist. | 8 | 7 | 3 | 9 | 2 | 1 | 2 | 4.57 | 3 | 3.31 | 3 | 2 |
journ magazine | 6 | 6 | 5 | 4 | 7 | 5 | 6 | 5.57 | 7 | 0.98 | 6 | 7 |
speech labs | 2 | 4 | 4 | 6 | 5 | 6 | 7 | 4.86 | 5 | 1.68 | 5 | 5 |
portable sound system | 5 | 5 | 6 | 3 | 6 | 8 | 5 | 5.43 | 6 | 1.51 | 5 | 5 |
The “Mean” is the average of your rankings. “Rank by Mean” shows how the committee would rank them if we just take the average of your rankings. There is a tie for third and none of them are ranked fourth. The “Standard deviation” shows how much difference there was among your rankings. With a scale of 1-9, anything under 2 for a standard deviation is pretty much an agreement. The “second life,” “motion analysis,” and “journalism lab assistants” proposals all had pretty wide variation. The “Median” is the ranking in the middle of the seven of your rankings. In each case that means that three of you ranked the proposal higher than that and three of you ranked it lower than that. “Rank by Median” shows how the committee would rank them if we just take the middle of your rankings. There are ties for second, fifth, and eighth.
Notice that the two methods (mean and median) give very much the same rankings except for the “second life” proposal, which had a much larger standard deviation so it turns up tied for third in the mean ranking and first in the median ranking. That’s because using the median tends to “throw out” the highest and lowest rankings and focus on the ones in the middle. So when you have rankings at both extremes, they don’t count as much as they do in a mean. You could also decide to combine the two methods (mean and median). If we combine the two rankings together, we get these three possible rankings:
Mean | Median | Combination (mean and median)
1 | Headsets | Second life | Headsets |
2 | iLife | Headsets | Second life |
3 | Second life | Journalism lab assistants | Journalism lab assistants |
4 | Journalism lab assistants | iLife | iLife |
5 | Speech labs | Speech labs | Speech labs |
6 | Portable sound system | Portable sound system | Portable sound system |
7 | Journalism magazine | Journalism magazine | Journalism magazine |
8 | Motion analysis | Motion analysis | Motion analysis |
9 | Outdoor ed equipment | Outdoor ed equipment | Outdoor ed equipment |
I don’t know which of these is the most accurate representation of your committee. At this point you could choose to change your rankings or not. And you could choose to vote on which of these three methods of aggregating your rankings seems most accurately to reflect the group’s judgment. Please let me know what you would like me to send forward to the dean on your behalf.
Thanks,
Terry
|
The analysis looks good. Whichever method we choose appears to make very little difference as to where any proposal shows in each third. I would be in agreement with any of the solutions below or a compromise as long as things don't get really skewed from our votes. If we can't, I think we should hear evidence again and vote again, just a thought.

Holy moly! I can't believe I'm in first place after just six days! I certainly don't want to take all the credit for the t-shirt creativity, but there have only been two other entries, and frankly there didn't seem to be a lot of thought and/or effort going into them, I'm just sayin. They lacked a certain...verve? What I mean to say is that I really don't think I deserve all these points when it's clear I'm the creative busybody in the group, and it might look kind of weird since I'm the voice of the student body. Anyway, I digress.
I think the Second Life initiative will eventually bear fruit and prove that we're headed in the right direction. (Jim: Did you come up with any material on Second Life's potential adverse affects yet?) If we can prove that there's a correlation between Second Life and something like dissociative tendencies or domestic abuse, I think we'll be golden.

I am opposed to using the median results for the ranking of the proposals. As we discussed in the meeting it is likely that only the top proposals selected by this committee will actually receive funding. It is clear from the mean rankings that there is a large deviation among committee members regarding the top proposals. This shows strong support and opposition which would not be accounted for when using the median list. It makes sense to me that our committee focus the discussion on the headsets, ilife, second life, and JOUR lab assistant proposals, and leave the rest of the list as it is now. If we are fine with the way the mean list currently is, then no further discussion will be necessary and Terry can submit it to the dean.

Group,
Well, I can't say that I found anything as Shelby mentions.
"I think the Second Life initiative will eventually bear fruit and prove that we're headed in the right direction. (Jim: Did you come up with any material on Second Life's potential adverse affects yet?) If we can prove that there's a correlation between Second Life and something like dissociative tendencies or domestic abuse, I think we'll be golden."
As I feel Second Life can be used in higher ed I wasn't out looking for adverse effects, on the contrary, I found lots of support for it's use on campus and support all the way to the chancellor's office. I would be happy to share the prezi I put together with the information I got from a handful of CSUC instructors and staff members. I think this will just "play" it, but you may need to move forward with the little arrows. https://prezi.com/secure/98d3ea3681765453b0c8e7ae00ce72a274938188/ (I've never sent one to myself, so not sure how it comes out on the other end.)
Shelby, I'll let you do the research for dissociative tendencies or domestic abuse caused by Second Life. I know that using virtual worlds has a place in education and am very proud of our campus' use and deployment of this engaging, interactive space for learning.

To all,
I realize each individual here seems to be somewhat invested in their own 'objective'. This is understandable if not something of a shame. Saying this i realize that i also fall into said bracket as i personally believe that the outdoor education proposal should be top of the list. But, i believe we should be concerned with what students need to help them complete the most basic part of their individual education. That being headsets and the journ lab assist. It is simple really. Students do need these items and it would be some what of a sham if we allowed our own personal agendas to compromise this.
As we do seem to be representing certain parties i will go ahead and plug Outdoor Ed. Just in case you did not know, there are very few schools that offer such a comprehensive program. The field days students get are key to the program, but more so to their own individual success. This Outdoor program is empowering students to go out and educate them selves. It is providing them with the tools to leave ******** and work for NOLS or Outward Bound. It helps them become more aware of their surroundings and what is happening. Do not think that it is about 'surviving winter in the mountains'. It is giving individuals the self belief and self confidence to speak and believe. The outdoors is the classroom not the trip. Having instructed for Outward Bound for seven years and instructed within Outdoor Ed here i have been lucky to witness this empowerment.
Thank you,
nathan

Lizzie-Wassie & resta the crew,
I want to start by extending my most sincerest, olive-branchiest apology here...as much as Shelbily possible.
It's definitely clear to me now that the outfit I wore at our second-to-last committee meeting was entirely uncalled for. My roommate lambasted me with a force. Incidentally, pairing denim with polyester can be pretty tricky. I, uh...I obviously didn't know.
Onward...
SO...I still feel that Second LIfe is totally getting the shaft, as it were. Here we are in our committee talking about "rankings" and "spring break" and "learning fees" and "committees" and, in mein eyes, the recent, official declaration of our mission statement--to assail the scourge of Second Life--hasn't really been hammered out. Seriously. A guy who lives in my complex is totally, like living in his apartment.....leaves his place anywhere between 24 and 39 times a week. Sometimes I'll see him in the hallway and he'll smile at me. He has to be just totally messed up, right? WELL....guess what he told me he plays when we went out the other night and had dinner and drinks? SECOND LIFE!! You gussed it.
So, I know we already picked our 1st and 2nd semester winners -- congrats, Shelby and Yvonne! -- but summer is just around the corner. Here are some ideas with which I've come up... ~ ...to be considered as designs for shirts to be sold during 2011's summer term festivitties - [please submit any ideas you may have that you'd like to be added to the ballot to: shelby@gmail.com ~or~ bjorn.s.phaelfla@nasa.gov]:

I'm so glad we've all become "kind of" friends! I will try to be at every meeting, with proper clothing, from hereon out.....and I will, in fact, bring jalapeno poppers to our next meeting! Shit yeah!

Hello again,
I hope you all saw the email from the provost requesting proposals for the 2011-2012 academic year student learning fees. The deadline for submission of those proposals is 5:00 pm on Wednesday 2 March. Three weeks later, at 5:00 pm Wednesday 23 March, your committee needs to send its rankings of the proposals from this college to the dean. This is made somewhat difficult by the fact that Spring Break is one of those three weeks. In fact, the rankings are due on the Wednesday after we get back from Spring Break.
So what I would like to do now is ask Liz, in the college office, to try to identify meeting times that work for all seven of you. Please respond to her ASAP when she requests your times of availability so that we can set up at least the initial meeting.
Thanks,
Terry

Liz and rest of the SLFC,
Apologies.....lost focus on that last email.
How about this---you tell me when you are free and I'll let you know if that fits with my schedule. I'm pretty busy these days, what with my part-time employment as a machine shop fabricator, giving billiard trick-shot seminars, and working with patent attorneys on my InvisiQuilt™ project. I mean no offense, but you're just an admin, right?
Anyway, one last thing...how did you get the little squiggly above the 'n' in 'jalapeno'? I've been trying to crack that enigmatic nut for more than a decade now.
Incidentally, I'm free right now if you want to come over. Email me back and I'll give you driving instructions from campus (phone's on-the-fritz).
Laterz,
Shelby

Hi! I have too many commitments this semester and do not have time to meet for the committee. Thank you for the opportunity!
~Starsky___________________________________
Dear Beth,
I think I speak for the faculty, staff, and student members (of course!) of the ***C when I ask you--Do you really have too many commitments this semester? I'm sure all of us have myriad commitments. Seriously...ask J-Olo about her commitments. Hell, my favorite movie is The Commitments.
Moreover, we're woefully under-membered as it is. Have you seen the list of proposals we have to deal with this semester? Did you ever chime in with your feelings on any of the proposals last semester? Have you even voted on a t-shirt design?
Please reconsider your decision to leave the ***C family.
Kind regards,
The C*** ****** **********ee Committee

Shelby,
Please do not peak for all of us. Elizabeth's decision to not be on the committee this semester is her own business. I personally respect her decision, and do not find it appropriate to question her actions.
Thank you,
_______________________________________________________
Ian,
I'll peak for whomever I want. This is an issue of free speech, it's in the second ammendment. Maybe you should try reading the bill of rites sometime.
You're not the Voice of the Students.
I am.
Not Ian.
Learn your place, Twamley.
Can I get some backup on this? Terry? Don?
-Shelby
P.S. -- I guess I don't have any t-shirt designs to toss in here. I think I may have already been through them all on Googles. If anybody has any cat pics, or animals of any sort, please send them to me. Thanks!
Morgo,
Can't make the meeting at 3pm today, hombre. I have a mandatory dental appointment. At 3pm. With my dentist.
Ms. McLachlin,
That commercial you did with the kitties and puppies touches my soul. I have given all of my student loan $ to the cause (after purchasing textbooks). Please let me lend my creative gifts to your organization. I can be reached at this email address.

Shelby,
The meeting with Morgo is Tuesday at 3 PM, not today.
See you there,
S.McLachlin
|
Ms. McLachlin,
Well that's no good either because I have an upper endoscopy scheduled for tomorrow at 2:15pm. Unless they slip in and out in record time, I'm looking at missing the remainder of the afternoon to barium enema aftereffects.
But Friday at 4:45pm could work for me. I'm performing in a poetry slam at 7pm but I should have enough time to work in some vocal stretches before I hit the stage. Hope I can find some quality castanets before then!
Be excellent to each other,
Shelby

Dear Morgo,
Ooof! Okay, this sounds kind of important.
Just know that if I'm stumbling around and slurring my speech, it's due to Novocaine and nitrous oxide and whatever else they pump into me for my wisdom teeth surgery (3pm). I'd try to postpone the surgery, but damn if these suckers aren't pushing and shoving their way out of my sore gums!
Hey, Emilyn: could your parents not agree on a first name or something? Ha, just kidding with ya. It's a fine name. [weirdo!]
See you guys at 5pm. I hope I'm coherent!
-Shelby
|
Got her to commit to a meeting at 5:00 today. Can you believe her response.
___________________________________________________
|
Actually, Morgo, I can.
I wrote it! I'm guessing you meant to send this to either of the two fine ladies who are CC'd here. Now they'll get your message.
Riddle me this, Professor: How does one land a position instructing at a state university when such cursory errors are clearly indicative of a lazy and casual modus vivendi?
What has become of academia? Is Professor Morgo's laissez-faire disposition representative of the status quo, or is his nonchalance merely marginal data?
Hey Professor: Do you want me to italicize anything else or are you sufficiently embarrassed?
Just count your blessings that I'm not going to forward this to the ENTIRE Student Learning Fee Committee.
See you circa 5pm!
-Shelby

My apologies. Something, as you say, is certainly amiss.

Shelby, you are a ridiculous but hilarious person (regardless of whether this actually happened or not).
ReplyDeleteKnowing Shelby, I almost guarantee you this actually happened, and likely is still going...

ReplyDeleteShelby, did you actually go to the meeting on Friday?!
ReplyDeleteSo, it's all done now.
ReplyDeleteThey know. They all know.
Even Terry.
